2020 Gold Maple Leaf

2020 Gold Maple Leaf

I just bought some more portfolio insurance in the form of a Canadian 2020 gold Maple Leaf. The coin is a 1 oz. 24 karat gold Canadian Maple Leaf coin.

The Royal Canadian Mint’s Gold Maple Leaf (GML) coins are among the world’s most popular pure gold coins, with more than 29 million troy ounces sold since their introduction in 1979. The GML was also the first bullion coin to achieve the heightened standard of .9999 purity.

The RCM makes 5 main pure gold Maple Leaf coins.

Many of these coins can be purchased from my favorite dealer: Silver Gold Bull – Your Trusted Bullion Dealer

Check out the chart below for coin size info:

I own the 1 oz coins and the 1/4 oz coins.

Here’s an old photo of one of my older 1/4 oz gold maples:

This one does not have the more recent security features discussed below.

It’s important to remember that there are premiums for owning physical gold and the smaller the amount of gold, the higher the premium.

That said, investors typically buy what they can afford. Even a little bit of gold goes a long way. Personally, though, I wouldn’t buy anything lower than 1/10 of an ounce.

1 Oz Gold Maple Security Features

The Royal Canadian Mint is light years ahead of the competition when it comes to developing security features for its signature gold coins.

Fake gold is out there and it can be difficult to detect, especially if it is plated gold. As it will pass surface level testing.

That’s why I only buy from reputable dealers and try to buy only the coins with security features to protect my investment.

All 1-ounce 99.99% pure GML bullion coins dated 2020 will have three unique features for enhanced security—radial lines, a micro-engraved maple leaf and BULLION DNA™ anti-counterfeiting technology.

The other, smaller gold maples, have radial lines. These lines bounce light and make the coin glow.

Check out the Royal Canadian Mint’s Bullion page for more information.

Investing In Physical Gold

There’s a lot of uncertainty in the world today. We could be facing a major depression, there lots of social and political instability, the rising US-China tensions, the possibility of massive inflation caused by all the money printing etc.

For thousands of years, gold has proven itself not so much as an investment, but as a store of value in uncertain times.

That’s why I believe that every serious investor should hold at least some physical gold as insurance.

There are many more reasons to own physical gold, check out my post on investing in physical gold.

Protecting Gold Bullion Coins

These coins can be handled but the coin collector in me demands that I keep my coins in pristine condition. This also helps the resale value.

So I buy coin capsules to keep my gold bullion coins in the best possible condition.

Check out Amazon for some Coin Capsules.
