UFO Coin, Trade Deal, Economy Financial Update October 11 2019

Hey everyone and welcome to this financial update. I’ll also be talking about the special RCM UFO coin that’s all the rage lately.

Oh and before I forget, Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I can’t believe 2019 is nearly over! So much has happened this year.

Before I begin I’ll throw out my usual disclaimer that this post contains affiliate links where the blog may receive a small commission on any sales from Amazon, Questrade and Tangerine.

Now let’s get into it!

Do You Feel Any Richer?

UFO Coin, Trade Deal, Economy Financial Update October 11 2019

Lots of reports floating around this week about how great the economy is, but people aren’t really feeling it. I don’t know guys what do you think, are you better off financially than you were last year?

According to the monthly reports I publish I’m doing great, but I must admit that it doesn’t always feel like it. The one thing that keeps on the right track is that I automated my savings years ago.

Longtime readers know that I’m a big fan of automating savings and investing because it guarantees that I do the right thing with my money.

If you struggle financially and you’re worried that you haven’t even started any of your financial goals or resolutions for the year then I highly recommend starting an automatic savings plan.

At least if you do that 1 thing it’ll make managing your finances easier. If you don’t know where to start check out some of my articles like how to become a millionaire in Canada.

Stock Market News and US China Trade Deal?

Stocks rallied hard this week on optimism about a US-China trade deal. This just goes to show that it pays to stay invested even when the headlines are filled with bad news.

Coin Auction and Sold Out RCM Gem

For all you coin collectors out there, the Torex 2019 show is on October 26th and 27th. This is where you go to find rare coins that are good investments. Torex holds 3 auctions a year: February, June and October.

Earlier in the year, I snagged an 1887 25 cent coin at the Torex auction. Yes, I’m a sucker for old Victorian silver coins. But finding them in anything beyond the lowest grades is quite a challenge. These coins have been appreciating at a decent clip in the past 25 years.

I always say that coin collecting is a great hobby and a great investment! These days everyone seems to be looking for alternative investments to real estate and stocks.

Rare collector items like coins or certain sports memorabilia can be great long term investments. But it’s important to educate yourself about any investment you plan on getting into. A great starting place is buying some books like coin guides on Amazon.

I don’t know anything about stamps or sports memorabilia, but I do know a thing or two about coins. So my hobby is alternative investing in really rare coins. Canadian coin collecting is a hobby that’s growing and interestingly enough its new Canadians who are flocking to this hobby in record numbers.

Special UFO Coin Shag Harbor Incident

Now one recent coin that I bought is actually from the Royal Canadian Mint. It’s the Sold Out 1 oz. Pure Silver Glow-in-the-Dark Coin – Canada’s Unexplained Phenomena – Shag Harbour – Mintage: 4,000 (2019)

This UFO coin is super cool and has the whole UFO Glow in the Dark effect. Here’s a picture:

I just read your column on rare Canadian quarters. You missed the 1991 quarter with only 459 000 units minted.

Hey David, thanks for the comment and you're right the 1991 was a low mintage quarter. In the rare quarter post I chose 1 quarter for each decade that is rare. So for the 1990s there were other quarters that are considerably more rare than the 1991. These rarer quarters were seen in the 1992 provincial issues and I believe a 1993 quarter with an 1867-1992 date on the back.
